Petrified Forest Nat'l Park, AZ

Awake at 5:30 this morning (which you KNOW is not my style!!) and arrived at the park before the gates were even opened at 7am!!!!!!

We were the first people in the park- so had it all to ourselves. We spent about 5 hours in the park and hiked several short trails (including Blue Mesa - which was amazing)

In my opinion, this park is misnamed - the petrified forest (rocks) are mighty cool, to be sure, but perhaps the least impressive feature in the park. The colorful hills, mountains, and mesas plus the petroglyphs are the real attraction.

But you will have to take my word for it.

I took more photos today than the entire trip= esp of the multi colored rocks....only to discover hours later that I had no SD card in my Sony a6000 camera :(  :(  :(
[What kind of stupid camera feature is that, that allows you to take hundreds of photos without actually recording any of them?]

Luckily I did not take that camera on the Blue Mesa trial -because it was too steep to carry much...so I at least have some photos.
The Blue Mesa view...

Petroglyphs - feel free to make up your story about what they mean!

No wonder you were headed to bed at 8pm. Such a bummer about the camera! I checked the blog as soon as you said "painted desert"!

Kathy & Carole-must have been amazing having the trails to yourselves. Sorry about the lost pics. Great seeing our beautiful parks, Mts, forests etc from your adventures.

Sure you know Trump will be the presumptive nominee since Cruz suspended campaign after Indiana results.

We'll maybe it was a little scary, I wouldn't say Petrifying. The petroglyphs are interesting, we have similar figures on the island property, though in miniature. So thousands of miles apart and both sites have the splayed hand man with his arms at right angles. We also saw him in Antelope Canyon Texas. He seems to be the universal petroglyph figure. My theory is aliens visited the ancient peoples in all of these locations and left them with the alien equivalent of the "keep on trucking man"!

Keep on trucking.

Wow! It looks like such a fantastic trip you are having. I'm so envious each time I look at your blog. Amazing sights, and the weather looks great - hope the wind has calmed down. I have a similar camera story - big trip to Yellowstone, first Christmas as a married couple. This was back in the film days, of course! You still got lots of fantastic pictures.

Sorry about the photos that got away! Oh, that sinking feeling…I know it. The ones you got are spectacular. Are you getting my comments? Carolyn
