Canyon de Chelley and the Navajo Nation

Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelley
We spent two enjoyable days in the spectacular Canyon de Chelley (shout out again to Steve and Cheryl for recommendation).  It is a beautiful canyon with a number of overlooks that you can hike to for great views.  We did them all.  The canyon is located within the Navajo Territory and the canyon while a national monument is mostly run by the Navajo Nation.  While in the huge area that is the Navajo territory most services are Navajo run - municipal, police, fire etc (think Tony Hillerman novels)  So to tour the floor of the canyon we had to get a Navajo guide to lead us through the canyon.  It was a terrific experience.  He knew all the history of the area and was able to show us some of the ruins from the people who lived in the canyon 800 years ago.  We also saw the drawings on the canyon walls from that time.  Carole did have her camera with a disc in so she will I am sure post some great pictures.  The campground at the national park was just ok, no hot showers so we'll move onto to Albuquerque.
